Vilanova leaves Barcelona

Club president Sandro Rosell confirmed on Friday that the 44-year-old will undergo further cancer treatment, making it "impossible for him to continue as coach"

Tito Vilanova has resigned as coach of Barcelona, the club have confirmed.

Rumours emerged on Friday that the 44-year-old, who took over from Pep Guardiola prior to the 2012-13 season, was set to step down from his role after suffering another setback in his battle against ill-health.

Club president Sandro Rosell and director of football Andoni Zubizarreta called a press conference at Camp Nou on Friday evening, where they confirmed Vilanova must undergo further cancer treatment which would make it "impossible" for him to continue in his role.

"After looking at routine tests, there is [now] an option to continue treating his disease which means it will be impossible for him to continue as first-team coach of FC Barcelona," Rosell told reporters. "I want to ask for the maximum respect for him and his family.

"We have got together with all of the players and the coaching staff and we have decided not to play tomorrow in Poland [in a friendly against Lechia Gdansk].

"It is a very big blow, a huge blow. But Barcelona has overcome many obstacles in its history and this will be no exception."

The Barcelona squad, including Lionel Messi, were present in the front two rows of seats of the press conference as Rosell delivered the news.

Barca won 32 out of 38 league games under Vilanova in 2012-13, lifting the Primera Division title with a record-equalling points tally of 100, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League for a record sixth consecutive season.

Rosell also confirmed the club expect to announce his successor in the coming days.

Del Nido: Negredo has a one per cent chance of joining Manchester City

The 27-year-old seemed close to completing a switch to the Premier League side but disagreements over the transfer fee look set to scupper the deal

Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has stated that Alvaro Negredo's chance of making the switch to Manchester City this summer is as low as one per cent, as the clubs continue to struggle to compromise over a fee.

The striker, who marked 25 goals in 36 La Liga appearances last season, has sparked the interest of Manchester City and Atletico Madrid in recent weeks, leading coach Unai Emery to concede that selling the Spain international would be the best option.

However, it now looks as though Negredo will spend at least another season at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan after Del Nido admitted that City had failed to match their valuation of the player, believed to be at around €23 million.

"We are far from reaching a deal with City," the 56-year-old told reporters.

"Right now they are further away than where we were at [in negotiations] with Atletico Madrid. There have been advances, but we are still far from a deal.

"Sevilla have valued the player at a certain amount and that will vary depending on if it's a fixed sum or with variables. Either they pay what we ask, or the player stays with Sevilla for another three years.

"The chance that he goes right now is one per cent. In the last 15 days I have lowered the price by €0, I'm very generous.

"The substitute for Negredo is Negredo. For me the best thing is that he renews his deal for another two years and raises his clause."

It emerged last week that City had been given the green light to launch a firm bid for Negredo after Sevilla captured Carlos Bacca from Club Brugge, with Manuel Pellegrini prepared to double his current salary to €87,000 per week at the Etihad Stadium.

Meanwhile, Del Nido revealed that Jose Campana is set to join Crystal Palace for €2m after the 20-year-old rejected the chance to stay in Andalusia.

"We made him an offer and he didn't accept," Del Nido told his club's official website. "He wanted to go. We accepted that his agent might put him on the market and he has reached a deal with Crystal Palace for €2m, plus bonuses and a percentage of a future transfer.

"The logical thing is that he signs [Monday] and [on Tuesday] he travels to the United Kingdom to do the medical."

Real Madrid announce Isco signing

Real Madrid have confirmed that Malaga star Isco will sign for the club upon the successful completion of a medical.

The midfielder has been linked with a number of Europe's biggest clubs after starring for los Boquerones in their debut season in the Champions League last term.

Manchester City were strongly tipped to sign the 21-year-old, with the Premier League club reportedly keen on reuniting the player with coach Manuel Pellegrini after his arrival from Malaga earlier in June.

But Isco is now set to become Carlo Ancelotti's first signing at the Santiago Bernabeu after Florentino Perez's revelations on Wednesday, with the fee believed to be in the region of €30 million.

"Isco has signed from Malaga and must now pass his medical examination”, the president told Radio Nacional de Espana. 

The Spain international revealed earlier in June that he had received offers from both Madrid and Manchester City but hinted on Monday he was set to join the Bernabeu giants.

"Real Madrid are a club that excites me - they are one of the best teams in the world," he said.

Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos spoke positively about the potential arrival of his Spain team-mate earlier this week.

"Isco is a great player and we always aspire to have the best. It's a joy to hear rumours of a transfer," he told Onda Cero.

Isco scored 12 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions last season.

Benitez: Ancelotti will restore Madrid values Mourinho lost

The Spanish coach has praised the appointment of the former AC Milan boss and expects him to bring back the virtues of the club

Napoli trainer Rafa Benitez has taken a swipe at Jose Mourinho by saying that he expects newly appointed Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti to restore the values that had been abandoned at the Santiago Bernabeu side under the Portuguese.

Benitez and Mourinho have had a tense relationship for a while as the Chelsea manager publicly mocked his successor at Inter last year, while also claiming the Spaniard wanted to remove photos of him during his time at the Nerazzurri out of envy.

The 53-year-old has now hit back at Mourinho, though, by implicitly criticising his rival's behaviour at Madrid in the past three years.

"Ancelotti is a great coach and a great person. He will somehow manage to restore the values that have always been important at Madrid," Benitez told AS.

"I have a good relationship with Carlo following our time in England and the Champions League finals between Liverpool and Milan.

"He is always polite towards other people. He's an educated guy, a good professional and always does his job well. He's won a lot of titles."

Ancelotti will be presented to the press as new Madrid coach on Wednesday at 13:00CET.

Messi has paid his taxes, claim lawyers

The lawyers of Lionel Messi have insisted the Barcelona attacker has "scrupulously complied with Spanish legislation" in response to recent allegations of tax evasion.

Financial crime prosecutors summoned the 25-year-old, along with his father Jorge Messi, to a court hearing on September 17 after the pair were adjudged to have committed three offences against the Spanish tax authorities between 2006 and 2009.

According to the prosecutor's complaint filed at a court in Gava in northeastern Spain, Messi and his father avoided running up tax receipts of over €4 million by forwarding the four-time Ballon d'Or winner's image rights to overseas tax havens.

A statement released by Juarez Veciana Lawyers, the forward's representatives, read: "We firmly believe the innocence of our client. He complies scrupulously with Spanish legislation. He has paid what corresponds to him legally.

"We are confident the judicial investigation will be resolved in the minimum time possible [to end] this situation which has left our client in a situation of media defencelessness which we deeply regret."

Messi's father Jorge, meanwhile, assured that both him and his son were innocent of any wrong-doing, revealing that they pay their fair share of tax to the Spanish state.

"That there is a difference of opinion between our financial advisers and the Inland Revenue is perfectly normal in the case of people that pay a lot in tax," he told COPE.

"But I can assure you that what we pay annually is an eight figure number. We are confident an agreement will be reached."

According to reports in Spain, Messi and his father could face up to six years in prison, along with a hefty fine, if they are found guilty.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed there was an issue between him and head coach Jose Mourinho, but it has now been resolved.
In September 2012, Ronaldo had explained to the press he was "sad" at Santiago Bernabeu, which caused speculation to mount about his future with the Liga club.
However, the Portugal international insists his troublesome period with the former Chelsea coach is in the past, and admitted he is unsure how long Mourinho will remain in charge at Madrid.
He told AS: "I don't know, I think he'll stay on at least until the end of the season, because he is a coach who always wants to win and we still have some challenges left.
"After that he will decide what is best for him, for the players and the club. But I don't know what he or the club thinks.
"It's a very personal issue [what happened with Mourinho], but it's been resolved now and everything is fine. What happens in the dressing room stays in the dressing room."
Iker Casillas’ girlfriend Sara Carbonero has claimed the Madrid dressing room had a difficult relationship with Mourinho, but Ronaldo refused to go into detail about what might be going on behind the scenes at Los Blancos.
"There are some things I am not fit to talk about but it's a delicate situation and I don't think it was the right thing to do," he said.
"However, people are free to say what they want even though I think that it was not good, because the business of the dressing room should stay in the dressing room and if you know something you shouldn't report it."

Messi to renew Barca deal on Thursday

The Primera Division leaders recently reached an agreement with their star player, and the attacker will put pen to paper later this week

Barcelona has announced on its official website that Lionel Messi will sign a new contract with the Catalans until the summer of 2018 on Thursday.

The Argentine's current deal had been set to expire in 2016, but Catalans had already reached an agreement with the Argentine over a two-year extension in December 2012, and the prolific attacker will put pen to paper later this week.

Messi will reportedly earn an annual salary of 11 million euros after taxes, while he has a buyout clause of 250 million euros in his new deal.

The 25-year-old is the third key player to sign a contract extension with Barca in 2013 after previous new deals for captain Carles Puyol and vice captain Xavi.

Messi has made over 350 official appearances for Barcelona since making his official debut in 2004-05, netting nearly 300 goals in the process.

The first ‘El Clasico’ of 2013 was certainly eventful, with neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo scoring in a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.

That hasn’t stopped the two players from hitting the headlines however, with Ronaldo missing a header from two-yards out and Messi now accused of spitting at the Real Madrid bench.

There is certainly no love lost between the two sides, with touch challenges on the Barcelona players not going unnoticed by manager Tito Vilanova.

And, after another physical foul – this time from Alvaro Arbeloa – the little Argentine appeared to direct his spit in the direction of the Los Blancos bench.

Whether anything was said by Madrid manager Jose Mourinho before the incident is unclear, but ‘the special one’ is unlikely to get a Christmas card from Messi if this particular gesture is anything to go on.

And, as is often the way, the two teams will meet again in the coming weeks, with a Copa del Rey semi-final second leg and a La Liga showdown still to come this month.

Barcelona are set to win the race for Neymar, a reported target for Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, with the Brazilian sensation set to transfer to the Camp Nou in July, say reports in Spain.

According to Barcelona based newspaper Sport, Neymar will complete a transfer to Barcelona when the summer transfer window opens, with representatives of both the player and his team Santos reported to have confirmed a deal is in place.

Barcelona have previously been reported to have struck an agreement for the signing of Neymar, but these initial claims were denied by the Catalan club and his Brazilian employers Santos.

But Sport suggest a deal between Barcelona and Santos has been agreed, which will see Neymar move to Spain a year before his contract expires, with a fee for the move yet to be revealed.

The 20-year-old is one of the most coveted players on the planet and, along with Barcelona, is reported to be on the radar of numerous other prominent European clubs, of which Premier League trio Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are included.

Manchester United were credited with a bid for Neymar on the final day of the summer transfer window of 2012, as Sir Alex Ferguson looked to follow up the capture of Robin van Persie with another marquee signing.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have been linked with Neymar for some time, and the Stamford Bridge club's Brazilian contingent have pleaded for their compatriot to join them, most notably Oscar who has thrived since his transfer to west London.

Manchester City's vast wealth has always placed Roberto Mancini's side near the front of the queue for Neymar, but whether or not the Premier League champions will make an approach remains to be seen.

City do, however, want to sign Barcelona striker David Villa - the report from Sport adds - with Neymar's arrival likely to prompt a bidding war between the Etihad Stadium club and Arsenal.

Cristiano Ronaldo's potency in front of goal was demonstrated once again on Saturday but, infortunately for Real Madrid, the Portguese turned into his own net in the narrow defeat to Granada.

Ronaldo's headed own goal from a Granada was the only strike of the encounter, and leaves Real Madrid 15 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, with the Camp Nou side scheduled to play Valencia on Sunday.

Real Madrid hardly deserved to take a postive result from Granada, but the manner of the defeat - the sixth for Jose Mourinho's side in the league this season - will irk Ronaldo.

The 27-year-old, who has scored 21 goals for Real Madrid in La Liga this term, leapt the highest at the Real Madrid near post, but could only divert his header past Diego Lopez rather than away from danger.

Ronaldo was offered little opportunity to make amends for Real Madrid, who were guilty of missing a guilt-edged chance in the final five minutes when Karim Benzema turned the ball wide with an unguarded net at his mercy.

Manchester United have never been short of a few quid, have they? 

In a recent list complied by Deloitte which detailed the money generated by the biggest football clubs in the world,  United sat comfortably in third place behind Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona having procured £320.3 million in 2011/12.

Most supporters would have been pretty happy with that, behind only two clubs as the  biggest generator of revenue in world football.

Well now they have even greater cause for celebration after a new list, this time created by Forbes magazine, announced them as the ‘most valuable soccer team’ in the world.

But what does that mean exactly? Well Forbes have put together all aspects of the world’s biggest clubs finances, incorporating revenue, operating income and value. Funnily enough they opted to leave out the mountain of debt accumulated under the Glazer family…..

Overall Forbes put Manchester United’s value at an eye-watering $3 billion, ahead of their rivals from Spain and a host of Premier League clubs. Check out the top 10 below - all figures and positions in this list come courtesy of Forbes.

10. Schalke

Value: $587m; Revenue: $293; Operating income: $101m

Schalke it seems, are quite a good model to follow when it comes to running a club. Despite their relatively modest TV broadcast income, they generate almost $300 million in revenue, putting them pretty much on par with Liverpool, who benefit from the vast sums of TV money flooding into the Premier League.

9. Juventus

Value: $591m; Revenue: $223m; Operating income: -$38m

On the rise in European football thanks to their Serie A win last season and subsequent qualification for the Champions League, Juventus benefit from a sizeable sponsorship deal with Nike. However their match day revenue is the lowest of the top 10.

8. Liverpool

Value: $619m; Revenue: $295m; Operating income: $45m

Hit in recent years by the lack of Champions League football and a failed attempt to build a new stadium, Liverpool’s huge sponsorship deal with Warrior has helped bolster their revenue. A presence in America thanks to owners Fenway Sports Group has also helped.

7. Chelsea

Value: $761m; Revenue: $362m; Operating income: $76m

Chelsea’s Champions League win last season netted them over £50 million in TV revenue alone – but their inability to qualify for the knockout stages this season will hurt them.

Bankrolled by Roman Abramovich, who has agreed a host of new sponsorship deals to help the club meet UEFA’s Financial Fair Play directive.

6. AC Milan

Value: $989m; Revenue: $341m; Operating income: $29m

The most valuable Italian team, AC Milan were forced to sell off key players including Zlatan Ibrahimovic last summer to help balance the books. The Rossoneri are excellent commercially, and deals with Audi, Sky Italia and Emirates among others helped their revenue reach $341m.

Value: $1.235m; Revenue: $466m; Operating income: $90m

Owned by the club’s fans, Bayern are an excellent role model when it comes to running a football club.

Posting the 4th highest revenue of all clubs in the list , Bayern generate a huge amount of money through their sponsorship deals and match day attendance, while their regular place in the final rounds of the Champions League certainly helps.

4.  Arsenal

Value: $1,292m; Revenue: $364m; Operating income: $98m

Amongst the least successful clubs in recent years on this list in terms of trophies, when it comes to making money Arsenal are one of the best.

Their match day revenue of $150 million is the 4th best on the list (fitting giving their position). A swathe of new sponsorship deals that will vastly improve their revenue from next season. 

3. Barcelona

Value: $1.307m; Revenue: $653m; Operating income: $96m

Currently the world’s most successful club in terms of trophies in recent years, Barcelona only come home in third in the most valuable list.

The capacity of the Nou Camp and a sponsorship deal bolster the coffers, and puts Barca’s value above $1 billion.

Value: $1.877m; Revenue: $695m; Operating income: $214m

Real Madrid are the masters when it comes to generating revenue; they received almost $700 million in 2011/13.

They’re also the most profitable team on the list, accumulating $214 million in operating income.

Manchester United are the most valuable football team in the world. While the fall just behind Real Madrid in terms of revenue, Forbes puts their overall value higher than the Spanish side at more than $2.2 million dollars.

The Red Devils have won 19 Premier League titles since its inception 20 years ago, and their frequent participation in the Champions League and the vast amounts of TV money help put them at the top of the pile.
