Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke will be staying at the
club next season after agreeing a new and improved four-year contract, the club have confirmed.
There had been intense speculation that the Belgian international
would be leaving Villa this summer having handed in a transfer request,
with Tottenham and Chelsea known admirers of the powerful frontman.
This contract agreement is a massive statement from Aston Villa, as
it shows that Paul Lambert's side have the ability and financial power
to fend off some of England's biggest clubs and keep their most prized
assets.
Benteke joined Villa last August for £7 million, scoring 19 goals in
34 league games in a debut campaign which merited interest from some of
the biggest clubs in Europe.
Whether Benteke made the right decision by signing this new contract
remains to be seen, but it certainly says something about Villa's
intentions for this upcoming season, and the Villa Park faithful will no
doubt be delighted with this latest development.
