Manchester United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel does not think Jose Mourinho is the man to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson because the Portuguese boss is too controversial, according to reports in Spain.
United face Real Madrid in their Champions League last-16 first-leg tie tomorrow night, and Madrid boss Mourinho has been linked with move to Old Trafford when Ferguson eventually calls time on his illustrious management career.
But Schmeichel, who helped United win the Champions League in 1999, thinks Mourinho is too controversial a figure to succeed Ferguson - a manager who has been a bastion of stability at the club.
Speaking to El Mundo, and quoted in the Daily Mail, Schmeichel said: "He will not be the successor. I don't think the club would be happy with everything Mourinho brings with him.
"He's a great candidate for his qualities as a manager but the club doesn't want all the things that come with him."
Mourinho guided Madrid to the La Liga title last year - their first since 2008 - but the club has struggled in 2012-13. They currently sit 16 points adrift of league leaders Barcelona, and pressure is mounting on the Portuguese boss to turn things around.
The former-Chelsea boss is a two-time winner of the Champions League, having scooped the prize with Porto and Inter Milan, but his proposenity to change clubs worries Schmeichel - especially considering the stability United have enjoyed under Ferguson's reign.
Mourinho has never completed more than four seasons at a club he's managed, despite his incredible track record of success.
And speculation has suggested he could leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season, after a series of public dispute with senior players.
